Gig Reviews on CLUAS - cluas.com
Christy Moore
South Court Hotel, Limerick, 13 November 2003
A windswept, wet, November night greeted Christy Moore when he visited the South Court Hotel in Limerick,
and though the wind howled outside, the reception he received inside the hotel was much warmer.....
Christy, clad all in black, arrived promptly on stage..., flanked by Donal Lunny and Declan Sinnott.
He began with 'One Last Cold Kiss' and a hushed silence descended on the room, such is the power of his presence....
With a standing ovation he left the stage and returned to play 'Sonny' and a storming 'Ride On'. Definitely a night not
quickly forgotten and with Planxty reforming and their planned tour in the New Year, fans won't have long to wait
before they see Christy back in this part of the country.

from Christy Chat
Laeiszhalle, Hamburg, 25 October 2005
...I want to write while last nights gig in Hamburg is still fresh in my memory for it was indeed a good night out.
Declan and I took to the stage at 8 o'clock and received the longest ovation I have ever witnessed. It just went on and on,
it became a bit spooky, then scary, then gratifying, then emotional. Finally we got to play and I tore into
"North and South of the River" (there was water everywhere which probably brought on this for I've never
opened with it before - it started off slow and quiet but built nicely and Dr.Sinnott was ready to roll when
we got to the outro).....
Had a phonecall earlier with my brother who is playing at Whelan's in Dublin tonight. He comes to Germany
next month so I did a promo for him and sang his "City Of Chicago". It's a big song here for the Ride On
album of 84 travelled back with thousands from Doolin (The Voss-in-Doolins!). Then "Ride On" itself,
McCarthy's classic, and the whole room was singing as Declan played that gorgeous Killarney riff for
the 1000th time and we still love it.....
The Deluge was upon us and then we pulled it back down for Pontchartrain. This should have been
the wind up but no one was leaving. We encored Lisdoonvarna, Voyage, Back Home in Derry and
fled to the dressing room. 5 minutes passed and Mick Devine comes in and says "Nobody is leaving"
so back out again and we finished it with Hurt, Black is the Colour and FINALLY Sonny's Dream.
I was knackered. Back in the room we had a mingle and finally back to the Dosshouse with a
good job well done. It was a special night.

died London 11 December 2007.................... He was planning a major tour and was working on

Posthumous Christie Hennessy album to be released
The album that Tralee singer-songwriter Christie Hennessy was working

A duets collection, it teams the 62-year-old up with such friends

his compositions, 'Don't Forget Your Shovel', on their number 1 hit,

The singer and songwriter was a legend who changed lives, says Frances Black
...Christie was patron of the charity, Children in Crossfire, which was working
on initiatives to improve the lives of children living in some of the world's
poorest communities.
... He went to Kenya with them, to spend time with the children in different
villages, and wrote the song, A Price for Love, and donated all the proceeds
to Children in Crossfire projects. I admired him for being so passionate
about his charity work, and it really inspired me personally....
Earlier this year, Christie was diagnosed with asbestosis, possibly picked
up from his years spent working on the building sites. He was determined to
keep busy, and was working on a documentary, and an album of duets with
people like Christy Moore, Luka Bloom, Tommy Fleming, and my sister Mary.
I went into the studio a couple of weeks ago to record a duet with him on
All the Lies. I was chuffed to have been asked to sing with him, and it was
an amazing experience. While I was there, they played the song he recorded
with Christy and Luka called, When Will We Learn, and you could really
hear in the song how passionate he was about Children in Crossfire. It
really blew me away, and made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up...

Christy Moore:
"These recordings were made at The Point Depot in Dublin on December 29th and
30th and January 5th and 6th, 2006. Since first stepping before the
lamps I have played in all sorts of places, upstairs rooms and downstairs basements,
outside halls and inside tents from Carnegie in Manhattan to the 12 Pole in
Carndonagh. I have been singing in different line ups and some strange
combinations. This particular leg of the journey began in 2001 when I hooked
up once again with Declan Sinnott.
We kicked off in Cleeres Theatre, Kilkenny
back in 2001 and over the past 5 years it has developed into, what has become
for me, the most satisfying period of my working life. Last year I decided I
would like to mark the work by trying to get it filmed and recorded. John
Sheehan at Sony gave me the nod and the project began. I opted for a huge kip
of a shed down-by where the Liffey flows into the sea. They call it The Point
Theatre but it is in fact a railway depot, a shed that can be dressed up into
a fantastic venue. I have had many wonderful nights there both as an audient
and as a singer. This gig began when Paddy Doherty got together with Peter
Aiken and The Point crew to figure out how best to doll up the old building.
Davy Meade serviced the amps and laundered the popshields while Dick on
Whitehad tweaked the feedback in the foldback. (I like everything to be
louder than everything else). Johnny Meade massaged the bowrawn, tuned the
boxes and kept an eye on the clock. Geoff Ryan showed Tom Kenny where our
good sides lay and how they might be lit. Philip King rounded up all the
usual suspects including Maurice Linnane, Cian De Buitleir and Tina Moran et
al, Best Boys one and all. When the Clapper Board came down Tim Martin had
all the knobs well polished and turned up to 11. Michael Devine was all over
the shop, himself and Crossroads keeping an eye on everything that moved and
quite a few that didn't. We were ready. We were wellcatered and coiffed as,
with trousers pressed, we made the long walk out to face the music. The
repertoire here spans the decades, old and new, all mixed together. As
the songs tumbled out some were well rehearsed while others were more of
the moment. I thank you for your support and encouragement. The way you have
listened has always raised me up. The songs will live on as long as we sing
and hear them." |
Album Review
CHRISTY MOORE
Live at The Point 2006 * * * *
He's been in the eye of the hurricane for a few years now, his second wind fuelling his repertoire to
accommodate everyone from Dylan to Morrissey. Christy's latest live recording is a canny snapshot
of a musician whose stage persona is as spit-polished as Bruce Springsteen's: every single note
buffed until it glistens. Declan Sinnott's electrifying guitar accompaniment adds welcome muscle
to such chestnuts as Sacco & Vanzetti and Viva La Quinte Brigada, but the
most startling find is the timelieness of his desperation-laden tales of emigration. City of Chicago
echoes chillingly, a dig in our own ribs at the blind-sight with which we treat immigrants while we still
doff our caps to our own past ignominies. Social commentary with a welcome sting. (Live DVD also
on release.) www.christymoore.com

Christy Moore, Andy Irvine, Donal Lunny and Liam O'Flynn have reformed
legendary trad band Planxty for a series of gigs in Vicar Street in early 2004.
In 1971 folk singer Christy Moore gathered some musicians - old school
friend Dónal Lunny (bouzouki), uillean piper Liam O'Flynn, and former
Sweeney's Men multi-instrumentalist Andy Irvine - to work on his album
'Prosperous'.....
In October, the band spent time rehearsing in North Clare and performed at

Album Review
"...As if the point that reports of his retirement had been greatly exaggerated needed driving home, the Great Sweating One has
released a live CD of tracks recorded over four nights at Vicar Street last winter.
The break, brief as it was, seems to have done him a power of good. His voice on this recording is lighter, stronger, and more
flexible .... Both speaking and singing, he sounds a good decade younger than he did on 1990s studio albums like King Puck and
Graffiti Tongue...
The standout track, though, is a mesmerising rendition of Ewan MacColl's
'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', made famous by
Roberta Flack back in the late '60s and arguably the greatest love song ever written. Lunny's rumbling synth and Sinnott's spookily
flanged guitar blend perfectly behind Moore's husky, crooning vocals, to spine-tingling effect. Interestingly, this song was recorded
at the Savoy in Cork on the 24th of February last, nearly three months after the rest of the CD..."
